PHOENIX, AZ (KOLD) – A hispanic rights group is reminding people in Arizona that the fight over the new immigration law is not over.

Brave New Foundation put up a billboard in central Phoenix that says, “Bring Your Papers… Racial Profiling Just Ahead”.

The group is based out of Culver City, California.

Organizers paid for the billboard through donations to the Facebook page called “Cuentame” with 40,000 members.

PHOENIX (AP) – Hispanic-rights leaders say they’re targeting locals and tourists alike with a billboard warning of Arizona’s new immigration law.

The billboard cautions: “Have your papers ready – Racial profiling just ahead.”

The group behind the billboard in central Phoenix is Culver City, Calif.-based Brave New Foundation. The groups says it paid for the outdoor advertisement through donations to the Facebook page of a group called Cuentame (CWEHN’-tah-may).

PHOENIX — A new billboard is stirring up even more controversy over Senate Bill 1070.

The sign that just went up at Camelback Road and Third Street is a political statement on Arizona’s new law targeting illegal immigrants.

It reads, “Have your papers ready — Racial profiling just ahead.”

The sign was paid for by the Latino-rights group Brave New Foundation. They believe all Hispanics, even legal ones, will be harassed by police under SB1070.

Supporters of the law say that will not happen and people who are here legally have nothing to fear.

Despite the fact that District Court Judge Susan R. Bolton ripped out most of SB 1070′s spine on July 28, Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s still doing his anti-Hispanic dragnets. And if other law enforcement agencies in Sand Land don’t have the carte blanche they would have had under an un-enjoined 1070, this recent video of a Tucson Police Department turnover to the U.S. Border Patrol demonstrates that Latinos are still being pulled over and transferred to federal gendarmes.

Plus, 1070 remains very much alive, kind of like Jason in the Friday the 13th film series. Just can’t kill that monster, even when you lop off crucial body parts.

Which is one reason the California non-profit Brave New Foundation has just put up this billboard at Camelback Road and Third Street, near by SunUp Brewery, on the north side of the street.

The billboard at 3rd Street and Camelback warns: “Have your papers ready – Racial profiling just ahead.”

En el seno del cuerpo de seguridad crecen las críticas a la polémica ley inmigratoria; “Antes me saludaban por la calle, y ahora no me quieren ni mirar a los ojos”, relató un oficial.

“Es una ley racista, y claramente está dirigida contra los hispanos. Me siento como un nazi”. Paul Dobson, un policía de Phoenix (Arizona) con 20 años de experiencia, mira a la cámara con seguridad. Por momentos, emocionado. “La gente no confiará más en nosotros”. El vídeo fue difundido a través de una comunidad de Facebook, Cuéntame, dirigida a los hispanos en Estados Unidos. “Nuestro trabajo está en peligro. La Constitución dice que todas las personas tienen derecho a ser protegidas. Con esta ley ya no será así”. Fue Dobson el que se ofreció a los responsables de la web: “Me gusta su proyecto y quiero colaborar en él. Soy un policía de Phoenix”, les dijo a través de un correo, según recuerda Axel Caballero, uno de los administradores de esa página.

Dobson es uno de los policías que voltearon su rostro a la gobernadora de Arizona, la republicana Jan Brewer, que afirma que “la gran mayoría” de los inmigrantes que llegan a su estado son usados como mulas por los narcotraficantes.

Dobson no es el único policía de Arizona que se opone a la nueva ley. Los agentes Martín Escobar y David Salgado dieron un paso más, al presentar dos de las seis demandas interpuestas por ciudadanos individuales en contra de la ley de inmigración, que permite a la policía pedir la documentación a cualquiera que despierte “una sospecha razonable”. El argumento de estos agentes coincide con el del gobierno de Barack Obama, que ha logrado la suspensión judicial de cuatro artículos de la ley, uno de ellos el de la “sospecha razonable”. Pero la gobernadora de Arizona ha apelado contra la suspensión, de modo que la batalla legal sigue viva.

El agente Escobar, de 45 años, es de Sonora (México) y cruzó la frontera cuando tenía cinco. Ahora vive en Tucson. “Tengo que hacer mi trabajo y tengo un deber. Soy policía desde hace 15 años, pero no me siento bien aplicando esta ley. Y, además, dificultará nuestro trabajo”, explica.
